Jamie Lynn Gilley, MSN, APRN, NNP-BC, has a passion to make scientific contributions in the management of infants’ congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) that will improve outcomes during the neonatal period. Her recent scholarship will assist her in accomplishing that goal.

Gilley, who is seeking a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing at Cizik School of Nursing at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), received the James A. Baker III Transformation & Hope Scholarship based on her academic achievements and commitment to leadership, research, and community service. The scholarship is funded by an endowment at UTHealth.

“Being granted a scholarship is a very rewarding experience for me. To have others look at the research I am proposing and see the meaningful impact it can possibly have along with offering to support me in this endeavor is very heart warming.” Gilley said.

Her 15 years of experience as a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurse spurred her interest in researching infants who are born with CDH. This condition occurs when the diaphragm fails to form completely in utero, leading to organ herniation and lung compression on the affected side. Her doctoral advisor is Professor,Sandra K. Hanneman, PhD, RN, FAAN.

“Despite my expertise in managing infants with CDH, we are not close to understanding why pulmonary hypertension in this population is so severe and how we can effectively treat it,” Gilley said. “This lack of understanding is one of the many factors that motivates me to obtain my PhD to perform translational bench-to-bedside research.”

She earned her Master of Science in Nursing at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston after receiving her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
