Hanneman co-investigator on $1.6M RO1 study of dyspnea in cancer patients
(Feb. 5, 2018) – Jerold B. Distinguished Professor of Nursing Research Sandra K. Hanneman, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN, Department of Acute and Continuing Care, is co-investigator on a RO1 grant awarded to David Hui, M.D., Assistant Professor, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, in the amount of $1,618,432 for the project “A randomized controlled trial of dexamethasone for dyspnea in cancer patients.”
Dyspnea is one of the most common and distressing symptoms associated with advanced cancer and intrathoracic malignancies. Corticosteroids may improve the sensation of dyspnea by modulating the inflammatory response centrally and peripherally and decreasing edema.
Hanneman’s role on the project is to assist with identification of inflammatory biomarkers as predictors of dyspnea response to dexamethasone.
