This is the time of year, nearly half of us make New Year’s resolutions. Many of these resolutions are health related. But only a small percentage of those who set health-related goals are successful at achieving them. This year, the Paso del Norte Institute for Healthy Living (IHL) at UTEP is offering some help. If you are interested in working toward health goals this year that target your diet, your physical activity, or your weight, you are invited to join the IHL’s Healthier Me Challenge. We will help you track key indicators of success related to these health behaviors and provide resources to help you meet your goals.

  1. There is a list of times and dates when you can get assessments done for free at our offices.

  • Veggie meter – this assessment will tell you if you are increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables you are eating. Fruits and vegetables contain many nutrients that are beneficial to your health, but most people do not eat enough of them. In addition, increasing fruit and vegetable consumption can help with weight loss.
  • Physical fitness – this assessment will tell you how fit you are. There are several types of tests that can tell you if you are improving your fitness level. Overall fitness includes cardiovascular fitness, strength, balance, and flexibility. They are all important for your health in general, but also help to ensure an improved quality of life and an ability to maintain activities important to daily living.
